Description
Gremoulias in Chelmos Kalavryta. Georgia Alexopoulou (ΣΤ΄ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on further work at the temple investigated in previous years during a joint research project between ΣΤ΄ ΕΠΚΑ and the Austrian Archaeological Institute. Excavations undertaken to the east of the temple produced poros architectural remains which had fallen from the upper structure, including part of Doric sima (Figs. 1. 2). In the eastern part of the excavation was a wall aligned on a N-S axis, resting on deliberately levelled conglomerate bedrock, which served as a retaining wall for the temenos from the east. In the north of the excavated area were two capitals dated to the second half of the 6th c. BC, belonging to the first construction phase of the temple (Fig. 3).
The area to the west of the retaining wall and east of the temple was probably an important location, as indicated by the presence of a number of important finds. These included a fragment of marble cornice decorated with anthemia and lotuses (Fig. 4), Archaic to Hellenistic pottery sherds, a few iron spear points along with one of bronze, a bronze laurel leaf probably from a votive wreath, two mesomphalic phialae and two bronze sheets with dotted decoration. Additional finds included nails, a bronze stud, animal bones and a large quantity of amorphous lead sheets.
Excavations in the interior of the temple produced fragments of the southern part of the cella wall, on which there were traces of Z type joints. Also found was a large part of a Doric capital, a drum of a poros fluted column and many fragments of marble roof tiles of Corinthian type.
