Description
Kato Achaia, Patron-Pyrgou Street (property of G. and K. Mytakidi). Georgia Alexopoulou (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a partially preserved pebble road and buildings dated to the Hellenistic period (Fig. 1). The road was 12.30 m. in length by 9 m. wide and was aligned on a N-S axis. It consisted of three layers of beaten earth and was covered by a thick destruction layer consisting of Laconian roof tiles and pottery sherds (Fig. 2). Beneath the destruction layer and parallel to the road was a pipe consisting of a series of lead jointed fired clay tubes (Fig. 3). Each element was 0.25 m. in diameter and 0.60 m. in length.
Building 1 consisted of a façade with two smaller walls set at right angles (Fig. 2). The façade was built with large greyish green sandstone blocks and smaller stones of the same material, preserved only as foundations. To the west and south of the road were the remnants of another two buildings. Pottery and tiles of the Hellenistic and post classical periods were also collected.
