Tsoukaleika - 2010
Tsoukalaiika
Tsoukaleika, church of Agios Charalambos. Lamprini Papakosta (ΣΤ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a Roman bath in 2009 in the N section of the property during restoration work at the church. At a deeper level in 2010, part of a classical cemetery was also found. The foundations of the old church had destroyed the antiquities at many points. A mosaic was discovered in the E section of the bath. To the W of the mosaic was the caldarium, while to the N there were auxiliary areas that were possibly later interventions into the complex. Two large drain channels were also found and probably ran into a large drain that ran along the street. At the entrance of the bath there was a stoa with at least two columns found in situ. The complex will be preserved and opened to the public.
Part of an Archaic-Classical cemetery was located about a metre below the bath. It contained cist graves, tile graves, and secondary inhumations. Grave A (tile): a few bones in very bad condition. To the S of the grave and along the N side, there were significant remains of burning. To the E of this grave, after the fill was removed, a secondary inhumation was discovered together with 6 figurines.
Grave B (cist): fragments of bones in bad condition, an open vessel, 2 seashells.
Grave C: (cist): built and covered with schist slabs. There were 2 adult burials inside in supine position, one above the other with skulls to the S. They were accompanied by a squat lekythos, bronze buttons, bronze rings, an iron strigil, two silver earrings, a seashell, and two fragments of glass paste. The most important was a bronze mirror with a caryatid handle. To the N of Grave C there were vestiges of burning, fragments of the lower legs of a skeleton and a nearly complete hydria, a shallow phiale, a small aryballos, and 3 lekythoi. This may be a secondary inhumation.
Grave D (cist, orientation S-N): skeleton without grave goods and with head to the S. After the removal of the skeleton there was a layer of burning over the whole surface of the grave.
Grave E (cist, orientation S-N): covered with clay slabs, fragments of iron nails were found at 3 points in these slabs. Inside there was a skeleton of a young individual with head to the S, as well as a pyxis with lid and a small pot.
On the slope of the S face of the property, inside a burnt layer, 3 complete lekythoi were discovered. These were probably inside a wooden box, from which only 3 iron nails are extant. A wall was found in the S edge. To its E there were two more points with intense vestiges of burning.
Finally, close to the SE corner of the property, a limestone slab was discovered with a worked surface.
