Iklaina - 2016

Iklaina, Traganes. M. Cosmopoulos (ASA) reports on continued excavation at this site in 4 trenches. In the area of the Cyclopean terrace a destruction level of Late Helladic IIIA2-B was found, comprising burnt earth, unfired bricks, wood and stone from the complex. In another spot a large, monumental wall was uncovered to a length of 15m, which makes a corner with another wall whose extent is unknown.

The east side of the building conventionally known as X was investigated in greater detail and the paved road that passes in front of the S side of the building continued to be uncovered. The road, now cleared to a length of 14m, turned to the N, where its N extension approaches the location of 2 large, worked-stone bases, which, according to the excavator, form the base for a gate. Ceramics from this location, as well as from the fill outside the E wall of Building X was of LH IIIA2-IIIB (Fig. 1).

In the industrial complex an open area, clearly defined, was characterised as a court, which had a floor covered with plaster. An almost square stone-fill E of the court perhaps formed the base for an installation, from whose base began a channel, rectangular in section, made of tiles, which was followed for 6.50m.

On a recently purchased plot 2 buildings (M and N) were uncovered. Two rooms of N were investigated, in which were found sherds of vessels, clay spindle whorls, stone tools and human figurines of LH IIIA2-IIIB date. Four rooms of M were investigated, which had been divided into smaller spaces at a later date; finds were similar to those in N. E of Building M there was a court, the floor of which had undergone periodic restoration and repair. The head of a figurine bearing a moulded necklace was found on the floor. S of Buildings M and N a room with pithoi and other liquid storage vessels was discovered.
