Description
Athens, Glyfada Asteria. Konstantina Kaza (ASA) reports on continued excavation. A round pit, 0.7m deep, held four layers of soil, small stones, vessels and other artefacts which reflect the periods of use of the adjacent Early Helladic cemetery (Fig. 1). Objects found in the pit had been deposited at the burial site. Over 250 vessels (intact and broken) have so far been excavated, with other finds including obsidian blades and two Cycladic figurines (Figs. 2, 3). The upper layer contained pieces of litharge, some of which are in the form of smelting pots. Their origin remains unknown, but the existence of an Early Helladic smelting workshop is supported by the discovery of tools that had been exposed to high temperatures, a water channel, and other small pits cut into the bedrock around the excavated pit.
