GALATAS - 2004

Galatas. G. Rethemiotakis (ΚΓ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that continuing excavation revealed strong foundations under the floors of the northeast area of the palace (the floors of which had been destroyed by modern cultivation). Between them lay stone and other material interpreted as from the destruction of an earlier Middle Minoan IIA palace. Trenches into the foundation of the building uncovered painted plaster, Middle Minoan IIIA pottery, and a human figurine. Early Minoan I-II pottery was found in fissures in the rock. Further terraces were found north of the palace. In building 2, room 2, Late Minoan IB pottery was found under a Late Minoan IIIA2-B floor, together with a steatite seal.
