Description
Gortyn: Nymphaeum area. E. Lippolis (Rome/SAIA) reports on excavation of a quarter to the south-east of one city block, east of the Nymphaeum, north of the Praetorium and beside a large east-west courtyard. The aim was to elucidate the structural history of a quarter created in the last decades of the third century BC. A large, east-facing structure which opens onto the court of the Antonine Temple was partially uncovered. Probably sacred in nature, it consists of a platform with a high krepidoma (with five steps): no traces of perimeter structures were found, and limestone paving is postulated. To the south, an underground room dug into the krepidoma extends beyond the excavation area.
