Kerameikos - 2025

Jutta Stroszeck (DAI) reports on the continued excavations at the Kerameikos southwest of the Sacred Way, to better understand the architectural context of the rooms uncovered previously, and their relationship to the well B37 (see ID20706). (Fig. 1)

South of the Room 1, a large circular limestone screed floor was uncovered (Room 3, floor diameter 6.50 m), bordered at the edge by a strip  made of small, polished, colorful pebbles (Fig. 2). In the center of the floor, which is also bordered with a pebble mosaic, there is a circular gap. Based on its typology, this is clearly the floor of a bathing room in which baths were arranged in a circle. Test pits in the south of the circular chamber revealed the remains of a circular enclosure wall, approximately 30cm below the level of the lime plaster floor. The drainage system from the circular chamber was located on the north side. The drainage system of the circular chamber was blocked in a later phase. At the same time, the southern part of channel VProtS-15 was excavated and the remainder filled in. An almost complete black-varnished kantharos dating from the beginning of the last quarter of the 4th century BC was discovered at the top of this fill layer lay.
