Description
Rethymno, Fortetsa. N. Karamaliki (ΚΕ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of three Hellenistic buildings in the square in front of Agios Loukas and along the supporting wall south of Cortina. The third- to second-century BC building in the square had six rooms and continued outside the excavated area. The stone walls were of small worked blocks and the superstructure of brick. Floors were flattened bedrock or earth. An ash layer above un-trimmed bedrock in one room may be the debris of a wooden floor. In places there were fallen remains of a tiled roof supported by wooden beams. The largest room contained a row of pithoi, a wide variety of other pottery and two sizeable figurines. All the rooms contained pottery, sometimes in large quantities. Other finds included loomweights, pumice grindstones, and coins.
