Description
Kato Mertia (Episkopi Ierapetras). V. Apostolakou (ΚΔ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a building complex in an area where Late Roman buildings had previously been found.
A number of walls and rooms were uncovered. One room containing a hearth, burnt soil and seeds, part of a pithos and cooking pottery is identified as a kitchen or storeroom. Four small bronze coins of Constantine the Great were recovered. The main phase of the building dates to the Late Roman period, but Byzantine reoccupation is indicated by glazed pottery and later constructions above the destruction layers. Surface survey indicates that the building formed part of a medium-sized settlement.
