Description
Chania Gavrolimni. The ΛΣτ’ ΕΠΚΑ reports the discovery, during the construction of the Ionia Odos, of a large workshop complex (19x13m) with 11 rooms (Fig. 1), part of the known prehistoric settlement. The building had at least three construction phases dating to the Middle Helladic period. In the last phase, rooms were arranged in three main long rows, oriented east-west. In contact with the south side of the building and below foundation level was a slab-covered cist grave containing a child burial without grave goods. Inside the workshop was a small horseshoe-shaped potter’s kiln, with a second, larger round kiln outside. Large quantities of pottery were found inside the building, mostly handmade domestic wares (Fig. 2).
The area was reoccupied in the Early Hellenistic period: a monumental orthogonal building and a round kiln lay to the south of the Middle Helladic complex.
