GLYFADA - 2009
Glyfada, Water works. B. Antonopoulou (ΚΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on rescue excavations conducted for the installation of water pipes. The excavations were conducted by B. Kolovou. Walls were found at 69 and 71 Kyprou St. (Fig 1). A tile grave was excavated at 11-13 Phoebes St. (Fig 2). The grave dates in the Classical period and contained human remains and a black-glazed oinochoe. Six more burials were found at 12 Thelxinois St. These include 4 inurned cremations and 2 pyres. The burial offerings include a Classical pyxis and a skyphos. Another seven pyres and a pit grave were excavated at 4 Klemanso and 2 Giannitsopoulou Streets. They contained fragments from lekythoi, oinochooi, a pyxis and other black-glazed sherds. A well containing few Classical sherds was found at Themistokleous and Nezer Streets. Finally, walls and large quantities of Hellenistic pottery sherds were excavated at 45 Heras St. One of the walls was particularly thick (Fig 3). From the area of this wall were retrieved 4 silver and 3 bronze coins.
