Description
Poseidonia, Evangelistria (property of P. and S. Andritsaki). Z. Aslamatzidou-Kostourou (Δ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a late fifth-/early fourth-century BC building complex on the east edge of the village, 700m from the Diolkos and 220m from the known Archaic and Classical cemetery. Ten rooms were traced, with walls partly cut into the bedrock and partly built from re-used limestone blocks. One room had a plaster floor, and traces of wall-plaster were found in another. A cement-lined cistern was accessed via four steps. Finds include a little coarse domestic and black-glaze pottery (the latter including three skyphoi, a phiale and a lekythos), and two plaques with relief sphinxes. It is suggested that the complex was built inside an earlier quarry, perhaps one used for the production of sarcophagi for the nearby cemetery.
