AGIA MARINA BIZANIOU - 2002
Type of Operation
Agia Marina Bizaniou. E. Adam (ΙΒ' ΕΠΚΑ) reports radiocarbon dates from carbon samples taken during excavation of this prehistoric site and analysed at NCSR Demokritos (see ADelt 53 Chr 486).
Laboratory number: DEM-1184
Sample type: Carbon
pmC: 57,4 ± 0,1
Age 14C (BP): 4459 ± 20
Calibrated age (BC): 3300-3000 BC
This chronology conflicts with the dating of excavation finds to the Early Iron Age, although it does connect with the Late Neolithic evidence from Doliana. Pottery from both sites (as from Kastritsa and Krya) includes groups of handmade, unpainted coarsewares with plastic decoration. While this pottery is usually assigned to the Early Iron Age, its production and use clearly continued for a long time. However, it must be noted that since the carbon samples concerned did not come from securely stratified contexts, these data from Ag. Marina cannot sustain a major revision of the established chronology of this pottery.
