Description
1 Thermopylon Street (O.T. 326, property of M. Katarakouli). (Fig 1:1). P. Avgerinou (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavation of part of the city walls (15m long, 5.35m wide) running northwest-southeast (Figs 2-4). The euthynteria and the lowest course were preserved. The north and south faces were built of sandstone blocks, and the fill was of small stones and earth. The mud brick which covered the eastern part of the walls was found in situ on the upper surface. Pottery dated to the end of the fourth century BC.
Parallel to the wall and 4.16m from it, were a retaining wall (Fig. 5) and four graves, two of children. One child was buried in a terracotta sarcophagus with a red painted phallus, outside which was a fifth-century lekythos and an oxidised coin.
