Description
Karyotes, Broken Fountain site, Lefkada. Vivian Staikou (ΛΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of four sarcophagi.
Grave one was covered by three limestone slabs, 1.90m in length. Inside, there were bones, a bronze coin, three buckles, a perfume jar, oinochoe, drinking vessel, clay lamp and pottery sherds.
Grave two was found without a cover slab, and inside there were a few bones of an adult, clay lamp and small part of a bronze ring.
Grave three was disturbed, estimated to be 1.90 x 0.61m, and inside there were two burials, one on top of another. The deceased were placed in supine position with heads facing S. Two ceramic vessels were found, and outside the grave to the NW corner another vessel was found in the middle of an area that had traces of burning.
Grave four was covered by a slab, and had dimensions 2.02 x 0.84 x 0.14m. Inside were two consecutive burials, one on top of the other. The deceased adults were in supine position with skulls facing S. A lekythos was also collected.
