Description
Gerakas, Stavros, Zaloggou Street. Antonia Gialleli (B’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of buildings (Fig 1). In total 8 walls were excavated belonging to at least two different buildings. Two of the walls were built with rubble, continue in the adjacent plot and were most likely part of a large rectangular building (AD 60, 127-134, 137-140) (Fig. 2). Archaic sherds were found in this area, as well as a destruction layer containing tiles, rubble, Late Archaic and Classical pottery sherds, and seashells. An almost intact, Geometric, trefoil-lipped, miniature hydria was found in a naturally-formed pit on the bedrock near the walls (Fig. 3).
The remaining walls were built with stone blocks and belonged to another building (Fig. 4). In one of them an Archaic, boustrophedon inscription had been used as building material (Fig. 5). The following survives from the first line of the inscription: ΕΗ[.]ΙΕ , and ΝΤΕΣ survives from the second. Stone waste chips, tiles, and few black-glazed and undecorated pottery sherds were found in the area of these walls.
