KASTELLOS (APOKORONOU) - 2001

Kastellos (Apokoronou) (Kaniadaki property). E. Papadopoulou (ΚΕ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the excavation of a Late Minoan IIIA2-B chamber tomb discovered after the owner handed in two Late Minoan IIIB stirrup jars. The chamber was irregularly shaped and the roof destroyed. A larnax was found in the east part, with a jug and incense burner to its west. Another incense burner, jug, stirrup jar and stone vase containing a faience necklace were found when the base of the larnax was removed. An amphoriskos lay close to the entrance. A pit covered by a stone and part of a second larnax contained bones, three skulls, an incense burner, a Vapheio cup-rhyton, a stirrup jar and a sealstone. By the entrance was a second pit containing a cranium. A collection of bones and a gold ring lay to the west of the first larnax, and a fifth cranium was found to the west of the first pit.
