ARTA - Anc. Ambracia - 2001

Arta (anc. Ambracia), Arachthou Street (Andreou property). Th. Kontogianni (ΙΒ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports that the completion of excavation on this property revealed parts of two buildings separated by a small drainage channel lined with limestone slabs. These lay outside the city walls and close to the ancient bed of the Arachthus river (the high water table prevented excavation being carried to depth). Building A (north of the channel) had two rooms, and Building B three. Pottery from the buildings and the drain date their use from the late fourth/early third to the mid second century BC. Walls of an earlier, early fourth-century, construction phase were found within Building A. Finds comprise largely plain pottery (storage and domestic vessels), a very few terracotta figurines, small metal items and coins of Ambracia.
