Description
Ano Glyphada. Venezouelas, Gounari, Prophitou Ilia, Valaoritou Streets (O.T. 384). K. Kaza-Papageorgiou (ΚΣτ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of a large, 52m-square, secular building of the Middle Byzantine period. The building had four wings separated into individual areas/rooms of varying length but an almost constant width of 3m. These wings border a large, 43m-square courtyard, within which were stretches of Classical wall. An elongated area (33 x 14m) to the north of the building was probably an outer courtyard with a protected entrance to the north. In contact with the inner side of the west wing and 15m from the southwest corner of the building were the foundations of a rectangular tower (2 x 2.5m).
Pottery found within the rooms dates mainly to the Middle Byzantine period, but some Classical sherds from an earlier use of the area were also collected.
