MOUNT LYKAION - 2011

Mt. Lykaion Excavation and Survey Project. D.G. Romano (ASCSA/Pennsylvania), M.E. Voyatzis (ASCSA/Arizona), A. Karapanagiotou and M. Petropoulos (Director and Director emeritus, ΛΘ’ ΕΠΚΑ), in collaboration with A. Panagiotopoulou (Director emerita, Archaeological Institute for Peloponnesian Studies), report on the first study season. Work focused on prehistoric pottery from the altar excavations, with additional work on Hellenistic and miniature ceramics, animal bones, terracotta roof tiles, coins, and chemical residue analysis. Architectural study in the Sanctuary of Zeus continued to document the bath house. The first Parrhasian Heritage Park Field School explored a series of themes: values or principles guiding a regional vision for the park; potential catalyst projects to serve park management groups; landscape character, urban character, trails, and sign design; gathering information on the history, geology and archaeology of the region. The first park trail, the Trail of Pan, now links the villages of Ano Karyes and Neda.
