Description
Kainourio (property of G. Taratsa). M. Stavropoulou-Gatsi (then Director, ΛΣτ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports the discovery of part of a Late Roman workshop complex 300m north of the road to Thermon. The complex, which extends beyond the plot to the northeast and west, has seven rooms with walls of fieldstones, most containing a destruction layer with rooftiles. In the north corner of room 4 was a wine-press and vat (the walls of the room also defined the press). The press floor was made of hydraulic cement on a foundation of cobbles and stone slabs. The vat was also lined with hydraulic cement, and had a shallow depress in the middle of the floor. Two tile graves, without goods, of the Christian period were also found. A large storage pithos was found in room 5, along with many sherds mostly of plainwares (including large open vessels, a lamp sherd with an inscription on the base, and two sherds with relief scenes).
