Description
Agia, Kydonia - Chania. Athanasios Mailis (Ephorate of Antiquities of Chania) reports on an excavation conducted at the Early Christian basilica of Agia, Kydonia in 2017 (Fig. 1).
The investigation revealed a small section of mosaic pavement in the central nave and a built installation incorporated into the apse of the basilica. Constructed in opus mixtum, the installation consists of a small central eastern-facing apse and two symmetrically arranged rectangular spaces. Its function cannot be determined with certainty; it may have served as the foundation of a local type of synthronon or belonged to an earlier church with a central apse and lateral pastophoria. A stone step belonging to the Middle Byzantine templon was added to the western end of the installation in a later phase. Scattered architectural sculpture was also recorded.
