Description
Preveza - Nikopolis - Nikopolis forum. Konstantinos Zachos (Ephorate of Antiquities of Preveza) reports on the first season of the five-year "Systematic Excavation of the Forum of Nicopolis" project, under the auspicies of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Preveza.
Excavations in 2023 focused on uncovering a rectangular building on the west side of the Odeon (Fig. 1,2). The remains of a courtyard connecting this building to other structures on its west and east were brought to light. Of particular significance is a naturally shaped plateau on the edge of which this structure was built, reminiscent of similar complexes in Corinth, Philippi, and other sites featuring "upper" and "lower" fora.
Within the building itself, excavations revealed a five-stepped propylon, the western and only entrance to the structure. Its proportions, along with the remains of architectural and sculptural decorations, indicate its grandeur. Inside, a mosaic covering approximately 350 m² was uncovered, with evidence of two construction phases. Additional finds, including coins and inscriptions, suggest these phases date between the 2nd and 4th centuries AD.
All findings indicate that this structure played a significant role in the public life of the Nicopolis Forum, although its precise function remains unknown. Further excavation will provide greater insight into both its importance and the broader development of the Forum.
