Description
Paul D. Scotton (California State University, Long Beach) reports on a synergasia between the American School of Classical Studies Athens and the Corinthian Ephorate of Antiquities under the direction of Dr. Gerogios Spyropoulos,
2022 was a study season of the Lechaion Harbor and Settlement Land Project which, apart from conservation work, included the study of the glass and shell finds from the excavations. Regarding the glass, which was found in 748 different contexts and 4,994 fragments were studied and photographed. Of that number 202 have been selected for publication. Although most of the finds date to the Roman Imperial period, as do nearly all contexts to date, there are a few late Hellenistic fragments and notable others, e.g. an inkwell, glass gem, game counter, and window pane. Shell was found in 21 different contexts and totaled 6,108 individual remains of 72 species. The individual remains were speciated and counted. Of the total assemblage 5,596 are of marine shells and of those 4,290 were cockle, largely to the east of the cement basin in Area B. Further study will focus on detailed consumption practices, the transport of materials from the coast, and the natural and cultural conditions that prevailed during habitation and abandonment.
