Katounistra Loutrakiou, Roman villa, Corinth - 2014
Korinthos, Corinth
Katounistra Loutrakiou, Roman villa, Corinth. Konstantinos Kissas (LZ’ EPKA) reports on the continuation (third excavation season) of the excavations in the Roman villa in Katounistra Loutrakiou.
The excavation started with a large trench in the SE of the centre of the villa. A big wall (E-W) was unearthed. It was covered in plaster and coloured lines were painted on it (red, black and ochre). Some other walls, located nearby, also bore traces of red plaster, indicating a similar construction. Alongside its W side, two infant burials were located.
In the bath area, trial trenches were opened alongside the E side of the already excavated space (excavation season of 2013). Three new spaces came to light. The one on the S is defined by walls built mostly of flat-shaped stones and the stone threshold is preserved, on its E side. This space also contains the two pipes and the well, located during the excavation season of 2013 (E of the L10 space), as well as a channel for the removal of water of the well. Furthermore, inside a big pit opened in the naturally pebbled ground, a large amphora was located. In the N side, the continuation of the floor was unearthed. The floor had big, square, clay tiles and it stretched out on the entirety of the L9 and L8 space. No walls containing it were found, whereas the walls of the space L7 were uncovered fully.
Towards the end of the excavation season, the mosaic floor of space twelve was located. It was cleaned and a restoration process was initiated.
