En 2000, la 6e Éphorie des antiquités byzantines a entrepris des fouilles et des nettoyages dans la forteresse, notamment à l'église Saint-François, de style gothique, qui a été entièrement dégagée en plan ; l'intérieur du monument, pillé dès le Moyen Âge, conservait des fragments du décor mural de style occidental.
