Description
Kastro, ancient Koroni, Petalidi. Evangelia V. Malapani (ΛΗ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the excavation and cleaning of a Roman period building, found in the NW of a plot owned by Th. Dazopoulos.
Excavations revealed the E side of the building as well as part of the floor, decorated with a mosaic. Its area covers 6.75 sqm, and includes N and S niches probably used for burials.
Almost in contact with the SE building was a mudstone wall, 5.50m long, oriented EW.
A short distance from the building a cist grave was discovered, 1.95 x 0.46m, oriented EW (Fig. 1). 0.3m to the E was another tiled-roof grave, oriented EW (Fig. 2). Pottery found in the excavation was dated to the Roman period; glass fragments were also found.
S of the building and on the SE side of the kastro, Hellenistic to late Roman remains were found, including building debris, architectural members (including stone capitals), and a clay acroterion. Pottery from this area was largely Hellenist and Roman period. Other finds included sections of clay piping, coins, loom weights, terra sigillata pottery and lamp sherds.
