Corinth – Tripolo – Kalamata highway, Kalami - 2014

Corinth – Tripolo – Kalamata highway, Kalami. Demosthenes Kosmopoulos and Maria-Triadafullia Valaka (ΛΗ’ ΕΠΚΑ) report on discoveries made during the construction of the new highway.
Along with some deposits of Hellenistic period tiles, a pit filled with LH pottery sherds, and cist containing sherds dating between the LH and Hellenistic periods, the main finds of this area were fragmentary LH buildings, discovered on the low hillside next to the road (Fig. 1,2). They are located c.80m E of the old highway between Kalamata and Athens. Excavation on the area was conducted between 2012 and 2014. 
The buildings probably comprise four architectural phases between LHIIIA2 until the end of LHIIIB/early LHIIIC. Of particular interest is a building with a series of rooms thought to have administrative function. A large quantity of unpainted and painted vessels and sherds were found (Fig. 3), thought to relate to the penultimate building phase. 28 anthromorphic figurines were also found (mainly Φ or Ψ type), and also some animal figurines, loom weights and small bronze objects (Fig. 4). Stone objects were also found, including blades and obsidian tools. 130 fresco fragments were found (Fig. 5), most small in size with black, blue and white pigments found on them.
To the W of the existing highway, an agricultural facility of the Classical / Hellenistic period was found, 56sqm in area. A total of nine walls were revealed, comprising three rectangular spaces. Sherds were found here, and also tiles, animal bones, and bronze nails.
