Plot of G. Georgiadi, Kanoni, Corfu. Katerina Kanta-Kitsou and Alexis Paramythiotis (H’ ΕΠΚΑ) report on excavations conducted at this site in 2007. A circular well and destruction layer of the Hellenistic period were discovered.
The well was found on the E of the site, and had diameter 2.6m at the rim. It was build of unworked and semi-finished small and large stones, bound with cement, and fragments of tiles, ceramics and small stones. A number of fragments of room tiles and sherds were found inside.
The destruction deposit was found to the NW of the site, and comprised mainly sherds and rooftiles. Pieces of bronze and iron were also collected from this area, and pieces of amphora toe. A bronze earring and ring were also found.
Most of the pottery found inside the well was dated to the Hellenistic period, much of it amphoras with traces of burning. Fragments of clay figurines were also found, including animal figurines. There ware also clay lamps, weights, lekythoi, oinochoai, jugs, pyxides, kylixes and various black-painted sherds, apiece of worked bone, and a stone miniature altar. Eight coins were found, seven of which were bronze and very corroded; one silver coin was Roman.
