Corfu - Kanoni - 40 Nausikas Road - 2008
Kanoni
Corfu - Kanoni - 40 Nausikas Road (plot of Arete hotel). Garifalia Metallinou (H’ EPKA) reports on excavations at this property.
To the S of the plot, a clay pipe in the shape of a Π was found, following the downhill slope of the ground from E to W. It was discovered at length 6.40m, and consists eleven pieces 0.58m long. The floor was covered with white mortar. c.13m to the NE, seven damaged walls were found, also following the slope of the ground.
To the SE there was an extensive destruction layer with mixed building material. Archaic period sherds were collected, and two parts of clay figurines of Artemis. A silver coin from Corfu was also found, with the image of a kantharos and the head of Hera. There was also a clay head of a satyr, used as decoration of a vase handle, dating to the fifth century BC. Small finds including the pottery date the walls and pipe to the Classical period.
The clay pipe might have served as an irrigation channel for nearby farms and gardens. It might also be connected with other parts of nearby sanctuaries.
