Plot of M. Pierri, Anemomilos, Corfu - 2008
Anemomylos
Plot of M. Pierri, Anemomilos, Corfu. Garifalia Metallinou (H’ EPKA) reports on excavations conducted in 2008, investigating an area where eight walls had previously been discovered.
Five more walls came to light during the excavation. Walls 2–13 in the SE of the plot defined a building of dimensions 16 x 9m. The boundaries of the building are not known., owing to the boundaries of the excavation site. Six rooms were defined in the building (Fig. 1,2).
All walls were made of one to two rows of small and medium worked stones, with some tiles and sherds between stones. Some architectural pieces (e.g. capitals) were found in the wall in secondary use. In all parts of the site there were found unpainted sherds of pottery, mainly utilitarian wares and storage vessels (including pointed toe amphoras of the third century BC), suggesting a storage function for the building.
Two burials were found in rooms one and two. Grave 1 (Fig. 4) was found adjacent to Wall 2, an amphora burial aligned NS with dimensions 0.73x0.34m. The skull and long bones of a child were found inside in a poor condition, alongside a bronze coin.
Grave 2 (Fig. 5) was found on the E side of Wall 2, a tiled roof grave oriented NS with dimensions 0.57 x 0.25m. Fragments of skull and long bones were found inside. The individual was possibly interred in supine position, but disturbance of the grave makes it hard to tell. The individual was probably a baby.
In the N part of the plot a wall was found at a greater depth than the other building (Fig. 6), with 2m revealed so far. Its masonry consists of worked stones.
Concerning ceramics, there were a few red and black painted pieces from the site, fragments of lamps, and clay figurines. There were also pieces of local amphoras dating to the early fourth century and third century BC.
Bronze objects included nails, forks, buckles, rings, and a handle with a lion’s leg end. There were also some iron objects, lead plates, stone tool objects, and grass fragments.
146 coins were collected, all severely corroded.
