Description
Kephalovryso, Stamna (Kousarida–Kostadema property). Lazaros Kolonas (ΛΣΤ′ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on rescue excavations from 1998-2003 as part of works for the railway between Kryoneri and Agrinio of an extensive Protogeometric burial tumulus of some 650 graves.
The upper layers of the tumulus had been badly damaged already in the 1880s by the construction of the Kaphalovrso railway station, and almost all the stone peribolos had been removed. Rescue excavations in 1998 revealed only small semi-circular section 5m long of the peribolos, inside of which was another ring of smaller stones. Terracotta figurines, one zoomorphic and two anthropomorphic, were found between the two circles. Graves were found at various levels comprising cist graves, pyres, pithos burials, as well as sandstone foundations of structures, and stone piles. A stone construction of square or irregular areas was discovered at the SE of the site built of rectangular grey-green sandstone quarried from the nearby Psili Panagia hill and transported along a special track. These areas did not contain graves, but some clay anthro- or zoo-morphic figurines were recovered.
Three cist graves built of limestone slabs were particularly rich in finds:
- T587: measuring 0.98 x 0.86 x 0.90m and oriented E-W, with a monolith cover-slab (1.34 x 1m). Near the SW side of the cover-slab was an amphora in an upright position. The grave contained the burnt bones of the deceased within the bowl of a bronze tripod that had then been sealed by placing another cauldron upside down on top of it. The whole composition was covered with at least five woven fabrics. The grave also contained three trefoil oinochoes and a kyathos of the PG period.
- T588: 2m SE of Tomb 587 and measuring 1 x 0.92m, the grave was oriented E-W and was overlaid by successive burnt layers within which sherds of handmade ceramics and an impressive head of a bovine figure were recovered. The limestone cover-slab (1.35 x 0.95m) had a smaller slab placed about it (0.65 x 0.52). A bronze bowl contained the burnt bones of the deceased in a small wooden box that was covered with a variety of woven textiles. Tomb also contained two PG kantharoi and a trefoil oinochoe.
- T589: 3m S of Tomb 588 and measuring 1.11 x 0.70 x 0.60m, the grave was oriented E-W, and had a limestone cover slab (1.80 x 0.94 x 0.24m). An amphora was found outside the N side in a horizontal position with its mouth to the E. A little human bone was found in the fill between the amphora and cover slab. A large bronze cauldron contained the deceased in contracted position with head to the E. Fragments of textiles covered the outer surface of the cauldron as well as the bones. 21 pots and an iron spear head were found around the cauldron and between it and the walls of the grave.
