Description
Megara. 16 I. Delli Street, O.T. 126. Evgenia Tsalkou (Γ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the excavation of a Hellenistic period house found at this plot, which seems to have been rebuilt in the Early and Middle Roman period. Two fragmentary walls from the Geometric and Archaic periods also survive.
Construction phases of the house date to the end of the third century / start of the second century BC, while the second phase is first to second century AD.
An andron was located in the central part of the plot, oriented W/SW and 4.20 x 4.20m. There is a vestibule along the W side, and there is around the perimeter an area where couches could have been laid. The floor comprises pebbles. Pottery dates mostly to the late Roman period.
A second room was located in the N part of the plot, oriented W/SW and measuring 5.80 x 2.50m. Towards the E/NE a bronze coin was found with a bow on the obverse, and an obelisk and dolphin on the reverse, dating to the third / second century BC.
Between these two areas was a third, oriented W/SW, with entrance to the W/SW, measuring 7.60 x 8.40m. The floor was made from compacted soil. The S boundaries of the room are not known, owing to the boundaries of the plot.
Room four was found adjacent to room one (the andron), and room five was located in the E/NE of the plot. This was a large space with dimensions 7.20 x 3.70m. During the excavation, there was located red, white, green and ochre coloured mortars, suggesting that the house was well decorated.
During the Early and Middle Roman phase, the andron was extended to the E/NE. A well was also constructed within this area.
Room six was found in the W/NW, with dimensions 3.20 x 1.65m, although the boundaries to the E/NE are not preserved, and those to the S/SE have not been exposed. Room seven was located in the NW from room 6, with dimensions 1.55-1.95-1.80x2m. The destruction layer of the wall contains more coloured mortar fragments. Room eight, oriented S/SE was 3 x 1.15m. The floor continues W, and the preservation of the pebble floor is fragmentary.
Room 9 had another pebble floor, and is 2.05 x 0.18 x 0.9m. Room 10 had another pebble floor, with maximum dimensions 0.40 x 0.45m. The floor continued outside the main plot.
