Description
Excavation at Gremoulias, Monastery of Agioi Theodoroi in Chlemos, Kalavryta. Georgia Alexopoulou (ΣΤ’ΕΠΚΑ) reports on further excavations at the site where the foundations of an Archaic peripteros temple made of limestone blocks were overlain by a Doric peripteral temple made of poros stone. Work was concentrated in the western part of the cella and eastern parts of the temple (Figs. 1, 2). The cella consisted of an elongated room, 6.60 m. in exterior width, made of poros blocks constructed in an irregular isodomic system (Fig 3). The opisthodomos was not located. To the west of the cella were many marble tile fragments of the Corinthian style, while marble roof tiles were also used in the early Archaic temple. The poros blocks were covered by a thin layer of lime plaster (stucco) consisting of several coats, while the blocks were joined by iron ties in the shape of a double T and set with lead.
