Description
Patras, 75-77 Papadiamantopoulou Street (property of Kollia). Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavations in the eastern part of a Roman building, possibly a nymphaeum or bath. Aligned on a N-S axis, it had an elliptical niche and slot-like cavity at its northern end (Fig. 1). The walls were built following the opus testaceum system while the interior was filled with a thick destruction layer beneath which was a mosaic floor with geometric motifs and marble revetment. The niche belonged to a cistern (Δ1) which was separated from the mosaic floor by a narrow shallow channel. Access to the floor of the cistern was down two narrow steps. The channel, walls and floor of the cistern were dressed with marble slabs. A pipe of Π section was located under the mosaic floor and ran perpendicular to the niche. At a later stage, the building was extended towards the east with the addition of two more rooms. The cistern (2.33×1.40×0.50 m.) was aligned on a N-S axis and was associated with two pipes to the east and south. Both were on a NE-SW axis and were built with tiles or stones and mortar. The eastern pipe was also associated with another cistern (Δ2) which was internally lined with plaster, while a third pipe carried water away from cistern Δ2. The finds included fragments of a marble epistyle and three bronze coins. According to the excavator, the cisterns were associated with the Roman aqueduct of Patras which is located nearby to the north.
