Description
Salmeniko Aigialeias, Elliniko. Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ΕΠΚΑ) reports on further investigations at a building located on the top of Agios Georgios Hill (Fig. 1). Elliptical in shape (23.15x13.22 m.) and with a foundation of between 1.7-1.8 m. in width, it was built with courses of stone blocks of roughly the same dimensions, filled between with small stones and mud. The preserved upper part of the wall consisted of one course up to a maximum height of 1.21 m. (Fig. 2).
During maintenance work within and around the building, a small-scale excavation was carried out within, producing a layer of brownish-red fire hardened soil in which there were small to medium sized stones with traces of burning. Parts of the foundation were also uncovered, consisting of courses of blocks on a layer of smaller stones and mud which lay directly on the bedrock. Elsewhere, additional parts of the building’s foundation and upper walls were located. Due to its solid construction and strategic position, the excavator has suggested a military function, while the discovery of a Roman lamp may provide an indication of its chronology.
