Description
Municipality of Paralias, Kato Roitika, Maritsi Street (property of A. Balaoura). Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of two buildings (Fig. 1). The larger (A) measured 15.62×9.85 m. and was aligned on an E/SE-W/NW axis, with an entrance in the west. Two different building phases were identified. The earliest included the western, southern and eastern walls. These were made of rubble, tiles and mortar and were plastered internally and externally. They defined a room which was used for storage, as indicated by the presence of a number of pithoi, one of which was reused as a dump. At a later phase the building was extended towards the east and south. Here the walls were less carefully made using river cobbles and mud or mortar. A thick destruction layer was removed from the interior.
The second building (B) was excavated to the south-east of building A. Its axis was aligned N-E and it was built on the foundations of an earlier building. Two rooms were identified, with floors of beaten earth and pebbles. The base of a storage pithos was found in the south-west corner of one of the rooms as well as the remnants of a pebble floor.
Between the two buildings was a thick, roundish wall made of rubble which was identified by the excavator as part of the building B precinct. A few pottery sherds were collected, along with part of a limestone capital, iron nails, a bronze pin and bracelet and seven bronze coins. Based on the finds, the buildings were dated to the Late Roman or Early Byzantine periods.
