Description
Municipality of Patras, Ano Sychaina, Kozanis Street and side-road. Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on excavations carried out in an area scheduled to be developed as a public square. The work spanned three consecutive years beginning in 2006. During the first year a destruction layer (2.60x3.0 m.) was identified, consisting of rubble, tiles and pottery sherds attributed to the Classical period. In the second year, three square rooms with walls of cobbles and mud were located. In the interior were found a large number of in situ storage pithoi, covered by the remains of Corinthian tiles from the collapsed roof (Figs. 1, 2). The excavator has defined the rooms as storage areas and based on the pottery has attributed them to the Classical or Early Hellenistic periods.
The remains of a second building were discovered during the final season, with two rooms covered by Corinthian tiles (Fig. 3). They were built using medium to large rubble, while the pottery pointed to their use during the Archaic and Roman periods. Terra sigillata pottery was collected as well as pierced pyramidal loom-weights, which suggest the presence of a textile workshop. Additional finds included a lekythos with painted decoration, black-glazed pottery sherds and an Archaic bronze pin with relief decoration.
In an area to the south of the building was found a bronze pin dated to the Byzantine (6-7th centuries AD), along with Late Roman pottery sherds and a Byzantine bronze coin dated to the 10th c. AD.
