Description
Patras, 109-111 V. Roufou Street (property of N. Sereti). Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery a pebble paved road running in a north-easterly direction (Figs 1,2). Its discovered length was 13.65 m. and its width ranged between 4.80-5.10 m. It was in use from the Hellenistic to the Late Roman. Below was a central sewer built with small river stones, with a width of 1.15 m. and a height of between 0.85-0.90 m. Also discovered was a lead pipe carrying drinking water to one of the roadside buildings. The main walls of these were built using the quasi reticulatum system, while their retaining walls used the opus testaceum system.
Eleven areas belonging to roadside buildings were excavated in the western part of the property. The walls were built with bricks and kourasani, apart from one attributed to the Hellenistic which was from rubble and mud, whereas the rest were Roman. Two of the excavated area contained Roman cisterns lined with marble revetment. In one cistern, a small part of its marble floor was preserved, while in the second the floor consisted of part of the original underlay of mortar and tiles. A built pipe fed the first cistern while additional finds included two Arretine pots with inscriptions in planta pedis, Hellenistic and Roman lamps and 10 bronze coins.
