Description
Patras, 53 Agiou Dimitriou (property of A. Nikolopoulou). Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a pebble paved road, visible for 4.95 m. and 3.78 m. wide. It was aligned on a N-S axis and dated to the Roman period, although some pottery suggests earlier use, at least from the Hellenistic. Various roadside buildings were also identified, along with a Π section pipe with a floor of square fire bricks in its north-eastern corner, heading towards the eastern roadside building. Another water pipe was discovered in the middle of the road (Figs. 1, 2).
Two spaces (Χ1, Χ3) were identified in the eastern roadside building. The northern one had a floor of pebbles, tile fragments and reddish mortar. Earlier finds include a rectangular construction built with tile fragments and mud, in which there were two layers, the upper with a shallow open concavity sloping towards the lower layer (Fig. 3). A single room was discovered in the western roadside building. Alterations to the walls resulted in a reduction of the initial width of the road. During the Ottoman period, three pits used as dumps were dug in the area of the roadside buildings, leading to partial destruction of the walls.
A central waste water pipe was discovered in the middle of the road. The walls and the arched ceiling were built with stones and reddish pebbly mortar and it was un-plastered. The roof was internally covered with pairs of opposed Laconian tiles and the floor was lined with tiles.
The excavation also produced 34 bronze coins, part of the leg of a marble statue, a marble Ionic capital (Fig. 4), a fragment of an Arabic inscription, part of clay anthropomorphic antefix and part of a marble male statuette supporting himself on the trunk of a tree (Fig. 5).
