Description
Kalavryta castle, Paliopigado (property of A. Martin-Pappa). Georgia Alexopoulou (ΣΤ΄ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a Late Roman water pipe leading from a natural spring located in the east and south-western parts of the excavated area. The pipe was 31.8 m. in length and 0.20-0.22 m. in width, aligned on a N-S axis and internally lined with hydraulic plaster (Fig. 1). Another pipe was excavated in the north-west of the area, aligned on a S/SW-N/NE axis and with a base of concave tiles. Probably dated to the Byzantine period, Hellenistic pottery was found below. A third pipe was also found in the north-western part of the area. Byzantine walls and an extended destruction layer were found in the area where modern building Γ’ was under construction. To the north of this was another built pipe, a cistern lined with hydraulic plaster and part of a wall. The excavator has suggested that the complex was an industrial facility.
