Description
Saravali, Iros Konstantopoulou Street. Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a large farmstead in use from the Hellenistic to Early Byzantine periods, with a total of twelve rooms identified (Fig. 1). Walls attributed to the earlier phases were built using rough river stones and mud, while later ones included tile fragments. The width of the walls varied between 0.45-0.55 m. while the rooms were between 2.50-5.0 m. in length. Walls 9 and 10 were internally plastered and formed part of a cistern with a floor of a square clay tiles. In the northern side of the cistern was a rectangular pipe leading to a pointed pithos with a diameter of 0.74 m
In Room 2 was a subterranean cistern used as an ypolinio, made of successive layers of broken tiles with pebbly mortar and preserved to a height of 0.80 m. The floor sloped towards the centre where there was a drainage depression of 0.20 m. in diameter. The area was later used as a cemetery.
A thick layer (up to 0.40 m.) containing roof tiles was excavated in Rooms 3, 2a and 10, with the foundations of Rooms 6 and 3 postdating the collapse of the roof.
The finds included bronze coins, lamps and large numbers of loom-weights, which date the farmstead to between the second quarter of the 2nd c. BC and the Early Byzantine.
