Description
Patras, Drepano, Greki (property of N. Pitta). Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of burials, a stone mound and an extended destruction layer.
Two burial pithoi (Π1 & Π3) aligned on an E-W axis were found, both with post-depositional damage. Pithos Π1 had a maximum diameter of 0.80 m and preserved height of 0.48 m. and had been placed horizontally in the soil. It contained few human remains including the skull but no grave goods. Pithos Π3 was similarly placed, oval in shape and with a height and maximum diameter of 1.05 m. and 0.72 m. respectively. It contained a primary inhumation in contracted position, along with a krater which had been used as a lid. Near pithos Π3 were another two skeletons placed directly in the sandy soil. To the north north-west of this group was found an extended destruction layer consisting of tiles, clay bricks and river pebbles. Its southern edge was defined by a retaining wall aligned on an E-W axis, built with river pebbles and mud.
A stone mound was identified in the northern part of the property, consisting of river pebbles, roughly worked stones, tiles and pithoi fragments. The excavations also produced large quantities of pottery sherds including black-glazed, along with five miniature pots dated to the Archaic period and one iron leaf-shaped spear point.
