Description
Patras, North cemetery, 31 Poukevil Street (property of P. Kotsopoulos). Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the excavation of 18 graves found in a private property located in the centre of the northern cemetery of ancient Patras (Fig. 1), in use from the 5th c. BC up until the 7th c. AD. The 18 burials were dated to the Hellenistic and all contained grave goods and were mostly un-looted. Shallower graves (0.83-1.55 m.) tended to be richer, of better construction and contained mainly young children and infants. Those at a deeper level (1.55-1.80 m.) were less carefully built and contained adult burials.
The graves were in simple pits (Τ2, T3, T9, T11, T13, T16, T17), tile covered (Τ1, T8, T14) or cremations (Π7/Τ5, Π6, Τ4, T6, T7, T10), along with a few secondary burials (T12, T15). The graves were mostly aligned on an E-W axis with the heads facing either east or west. Grave goods included architectural remains, unguentaria, lamps, anthropomorphic clay vessels, gold and silver jewellery, strigils, coins and four gold wreaths.
