Description
Patras, Riganokambos area, Ayia Irini. Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of four walls associated with a Roman farmstead (Fig. 1). The walls (T1, T2, T3 and T4) were built with large river pebbles and tile fragments and were bound with lime mortar. The remains of a destruction layer and a rectangular structure (ypolinio) associated with a wine press were also present, with interior and exterior dimensions of 1.70×1.15 m. and 2.45×1.80 m. respectively, along with a preserved height of 0.47-1.0 m. There was a step along the southern, western and northern sides of the structure, with a height of 0.33-0.44 m. and width of 0.7-0.10 m. In the centre was a depression and a pithos, with a diameter of 0.42 m. and depth of 0.28 m. The walls were internally lined with layers of hydraulic plaster of 0.013-0.028 m. in thickness. Small numbers of finds were recovered, including plain undecorated pottery sherds, lamp fragments, iron nails and two small oxidised bronze coins.
