Description
Patras, 49 Londou Street (property of O.-M. Theofila). Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a Roman wall (6.40x0.55 m.) aligned on a N-S axis in the western part of the property and associated with a staircase and retaining wall (Fig. 1. 2) Two construction styles were identified; quasi-reticulatum and opus testaceum in the lower and upper parts respectively. The staircase was made of roughly shaped stones, fragments of brick and hard mortar (Fig. 3). Three rooms were identified to the west of the wall, one decorated with a mosaic floor of floral motifs. The second was younger in date and formed part of a private Roman bath, the floor of which was covered with limestone slabs. Underneath the floor was a clay brick vault supported by walls with holes for the circulation of hot air.
In the eastern part of the property were walls dated to the Roman and post Roman period as well as parts of a square pipe covered by clay bricks. In the north-western part of the property was part of a circular structure built using the opus testaceum system. It was 0.47 m. wide with a preserved height of 0.95 m. and had a circumference of 2.40 m. It is associated with a private bath and its partially preserved floor was lined with lime plaster and vertically placed marble slabs. Spolia and Roman and post-Roman pottery sherds were collected during the excavation.
