Description
Patras, 69-73 Charalambi Street. Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a pebble paved road aligned on a N-S axis, dated to the Hellenistic and Roman periods (Figs. 1, 2, 3). The road is associated with an underground sewer and three other pipes, one cylindrical made of clay and another built with a square cross section, all linked to the sewage system (Fig. 4). To the east of the road was a wall of 0.40 m. in width, built with squared poros blocks and aligned on a N-S axis, while to the west was a Late Roman building with its façade along the road. The floor of the eastern part of the building (5.70×4.50 m.) was decorated with a mosaic consisting of geometric motifs (Fig. 5), while in the west were two square kilns, one of which had two internal chambers.
To the north-west of the building were parts of a pebble floor, pipes and a cistern associated with a complex sewage system which formed part of a bath complex dated to the Roman period. Another building with its façade located along the road and postdating the building with the mosaic, was identified in the southern area of the plot, built using the opus mixtum system. To the east, two cisterns at different depths were found, probably the rain water collection. Two Byzantine cist burials were also excavated but were devoid of grave goods. Throughout the property were the foundations of Hellenistic buildings, while the excavations produced 59 copper coins and 14 pieces of architectural spolia.
