Description
Patras, M. Neofitou and Sotiriadou Street (property of Savvopoulou). Lambrini Papakosta (ΣΤ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on the discovery of a Roman building consisting of four rooms constructed following the opus testaceum system (Fig. 1). The building was organised around an atrium (Room II) with an impluvium dressed internally with marble slabs. The floor was decorated with a mosaic currently fragmentarily preserved. In the north, the atrium was linked to an area (Room I) with a mosaic of a floral motive. In a later period, some alterations were carried out. The southern area of the building was destroyed by the construction of two later walls. The east sector (Rooms IV and V) was not excavated as it extended under another property. To the south of Rooms II and V were unlinked architectural remains together with a Byzantine burial in a constructed cist grave. It had no grave goods and one of its covering tiles was a reversed epikranon with the partial inscription ΛΚΑ. In the south-west of the building, part of the ancient road as well as pipes built during a later period were investigated. The excavator identified the building as a roadside house with at least two different phases of occupation.
