Description
Vartholomio, Katsiveri/Botsikia. Christos Matzanas (Ζ’ ΕΠΚΑ) reports on further investigations at the Mycenaean tholos tomb (Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5). The structure was 10 m. in dimeter and approximately 36 m. in length, while its height increased towards the north-east, following the slope of the field (Figs. 7, 11). It was built with roughly worked blocks and smaller stones (Fig 8). A rhomboid shaped hearth (2.4x1.8 m.), aligned on an E-W axis was located within the chamber, with pottery sherds mainly of kylikes at the entrance of the dromos. Burnt animal bones and a few pottery fragments were collected from the ashy deposits within the hearth, while the chamber also contained large quantities of chipped stone artefacts (Figs. 3, 10) and pottery. The stomion consisted of a narrow corridor (2.6x1.5 m.) and was sealed with rubble (Fig. 6). At the entrance to the dromos and close to the western side of the tomb was a large rock, on top of and around which was found Mycenaean pottery, again mainly kylikes (Fig. 9).
